Your co-worker is running into the problem with the broken XML file in
the update repository and you are not, maybe you didn't touch smart in
the short timeframe where the broken XML file was on the server?

Try this:

rm -f /var/lib/smart/cache
rm -f /var/lib/smart/channels/*
smart update

Does it work then?
