It is in fact 43Hz interlaced and it's that interlaced bit that modern monitors apparently don't like. And unfortunatele it _IS NOT POSSIBLE_ (*) to select the frequency. You don't even know in advance what timing the graphics card is going to use. That said, I've only had reports about this for ATI cards. And for them there is a workaround 10.2.
