Since the updates came with a new kernel, I have rebooted my system. And the
problem is still here. I don't know if it's related, but even in runlevel 5,
I had to manually start GDM by entering /opt/gnome/sbin/gdm.

Happened to me in KDE after an update. Restart Gnome and check if the
problem
still exist. If so, they a PC reboot and try again. If ot still exist
there
is a bigger problem. Otherwise it is probably a call to a changed function
(?)
