It's probably essential to have a closed set of patterns. We can (we must :-) discuss _before_ launching the system, but after that the modification of the pattern list should be very difficult.

Think of patterns as of packages. By adding an external repo,
extending the patterns list should be fairly easy.

Of course, the same traps as with packages exist. One can't
prevent name (or content) clashes. But you can minimize them
by being as open as possible.

it's not the problem I was addressing.

Packages have content, two packages of similar names can have very different coding.

patterns are more like categories in the wiki, only informational. If one looks for a text editor, he should not have to look at "writers" "editors" text processors", but only at one of them. several nearby words can exist, but hopefully with a clear difference in the meaning (editor versus word processor or publisher)
