It's probably essential to have a closed set of patterns. We can (we must :-) discuss _before_ launching the system, but after that the modification of the pattern list should be very difficult.
Think of patterns as of packages. By adding an external repo, extending the patterns list should be fairly easy. Of course, the same traps as with packages exist. One can't prevent name (or content) clashes. But you can minimize them by being as open as possible.
