XML is more convenient to be transformed into various formats, for
example with XSL Transformation Stylesheets:
- - HTML pages
- - plain text files
- - PHP arrays for a dynamic web interface
- - SQL scripts for database
- - Smart channel files
- - Smart mirror config files

Yes, that too.

And it's pretty much a tree structure anyway, so XML is a quite natural
choice.

I don't think a database would be very convenient. You have to provide
dumps and/or online access to be able to use the data.
