First the problem:
After finishing the upgrade from 10.1 alpha 3 to alpha 4 I tried to use the graphical log-in to my user account. This initially resulted in an alert box with the warning that it couldn't start kstartupconfig. Pressing "Okay" resulted in a second alert box stating that kdeinit couldn't be started. After pressing "Okay" on this box resulted in being returned to the log-in screen.
The solution/workaround:
I logged in using fvwm as the window manager instead of KDE, logged back out, swapped back to KDE and logged back in again. Not sure what this reset, and a look at the available log files doesn't appear to show anything, but this sequence worked.
