Parece ser que la cosa pinta bastante bien con el nuevo presidente usaniano, con respecto al software de codigo abierto. Pero lamentablemente, aquellos presidentes que no se rendian a los intereses de las grandes corporaciones, terminaban muertos. Aparecido hoy en Linux Magazine: http://www.linux-mag.com/cache/7232/1.html (les pego el texto porsi alguien no lo puede ver) President Obama: Good for Open Source? Even though Barack Obama was only just sworn in as President of the United States on Tuesday, his administration already appears to be showing an interest in open source. Bryan Richard Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 Technology — both in application and message — was a big part of the Barack Obama presidential campaign. Now that President Obama has been sworn in, technology appears to still be front and center. Case in point: Co-founder and former CEO of SunMicrosystems, Scott McNealy revealed to the BBC this week that he had been tapped by the Obama administration to write a paper on the benefits to the government of using open source. There have been no shortage of nods toward the new President's stance on openness: Blogs especially have been quite to point out his weekly YouTube videos, www.whitehouse.gov's creative commons license, or the site's metaphor-rich robot.txt file. But this request of Mr. McNealy sounds like something that could be used to develop a substantial plan of action for government-funded technology. Certainly a more open approach to US technology would be a good thing. To quote Mr. McNealy: "The government ought to mandate open source products based on open source reference implementations to improve security, get higher quality software, lower costs, higher reliability — all the benefits that come with open software." So, where might President Obama apply open source? If you look through his technology agenda (which makes no mention of open source), one section that pops out falls under the topic of Electronic Healthcare Records (EHRs). Lower Health Care Costs by Investing in Electronic Information Technology Systems: Use health information technology to lower the cost of health care. Invest $10 billion a year over the next five years to move the U.S. health care system to broad adoption of standards-based electronic health information systems, including electronic health records. While this sounds promising, there are a host of issues that quickly appear when you start to dig a little deeper into the migration toward EHRs. * Most estimates put the cost of moving medical records in the US to an electronic system in upwards of $100 billion and would take more than 10 years to implement. * There is an ongoing debate concerning the maturity of EHR standards. For example, when we wrote an article on Linux and open source in healthcare in 2007, we couldn't get the US's largest healthcare technology provider to even talk on the record about standards, saying the discussion would be premature. * Technology is far from pervasive in the medical industry. By some estimates more than 80% of medical record transactions take place on paper. And you thought your company was a late adopter… So not only would you have to solve all of the problems of security, standards, and existing record scanning just to get started, you would then need to go in and put computers on a lot of desks where there are none.1 That's not to say that applying open source and open standards to the healthcare industry is impossible and isn't already gaining traction in some areas. For example, the Veterans Administration clinical information system software (VistA) is open source and, by all accounts, an incredible success: "VistA saves lives and money." But even with ready successes like this to point to, President Obama will find the transition to open source difficult. The DoD has been waging a long-term war to have VistA replaced with a proprietary system. Old habits — particularly in Washington — die hard. But I take the new President at his word when he said in his inauguration speech: The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works […] Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. I think that requesting a paper on open source from Mr. McNealy is a good first step in that direction. So here's to openness — from the circuitboard to the citizenry– at every level government. 1 You can almost hear Microsoft warming up their usability arguments for Vista/7, can't you? [opensuse-es] Google Chrome Unstable en OS11.0 x64

Cómo va gente? Mi duda es la siguiente: Estoy tratando de probar Google Chrome en Linux (alguien sabe por qué se tardan tanto en sacar una vesión "medianamente oficial" para Linux mientras que para Windows hace rato que ya se lo puede probar???) en OS11.0. Descargo el RPM de la siguiente dirección: http://www.benkevan.com/blog/google-chrome-3-0-198-1-released-%E2%80%93-ope… Lo probé en dos PCs con OS11.1 de 32 Bits y me andubo sin problemas. Lo único que puedo agregar es que me muestra durante menos de un segundo lo que parece ser la pantalla de inicio del programa, pero es apenas un pantallazo, se cierra rápidamente y obtengo ese error. Si alguien tiene una idea de lo que puede llegar a ser se lo agradecería. Será un problema de los 64 Bits o de OS11.0? No he podido probar en una PC con OS11.0 de 32 Bits. [opensuse-es] Pasar de VirtualBox OSE a versión "comercial".

Cómo les va? Mi duda es la siguiente: Tengo en mi PC personal instalado el VirtualBox OSE 3.xxx (no recuerdo exactamente cual pero eso no es importante). Lo que quiero hacer es instalar la versión no libre para probar algunas cosas entre ellas el soporte USB. Mi duda es si voy a poder seguir usando las máquinas virtuales que ya tengo instaladas (estoy casi seguro que si pero por las dudas pregunto) y en caso de ser afirmativo si tendría que hacer algo en especial o simplemente indicar cuál o cuáles son los discos virtuales que tengo configurados y con eso tendría que salir andando. Hola gente cómo les va? Les escribo por lo siguiente: Resulta que estoy haciendo unas pruebitas con el programa ZoneMinder para configurar un sistema de cámaras. De momento como son pruebas muy pero muy básicas me basta probarlo con un par de webcams USB. El tema es que cuando las conecto a mi sistemas (en este caso es un OS11.1 32 Bits) me la reconoce de la siguiente manera (dmesg): usb 3-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4 usb 3-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice usb 3-3: SN9C10[12] PC Camera Controller detected (vid:pid 0x0C45:0x602E) usb 3-3: OV7630 image sensor detected usb 3-3: Initialization succeeded usb 3-3: V4L2 device registered as /dev/video0 usb 3-3: Optional device control through 'sysfs' interface disabled usb 3-3: New USB device found, idVendor=0c45, idProduct=602e usb 3-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=1, SerialNumber=0 usb 3-3: Product: USB camera Pero luego al querer utilizarla con Cheese me sale la pantalla con las típicas barritas de color y un recuadro pequeño abajo a la derecha con lluvia. En la configuración del programa efectivamente veo que detecta la cámara (aparece como SN9C1xx PC Camera (/dev/video0)) pero no me deja elegir la resolución. Si corro Cheese por línea de comandos (cheese -v) me dice lo siguiente: (cheese:7747): GStreamer-WARNING **: Failed to load plugin '/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstcacasink.so': /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstcacasink.so: undefined symbol: caca_dither_bitmap Detected v4l2 device: SN9C1xx PC Camera Driver: sn9c102, version: 65839 Bus info: usb-0000:00:13.1-3 Capabilities: 0x05000001 Ya google un poco respecto a lo de caca_dither_bitmap pero no encontré nada consistente. Con otra marca de cámara web pasa exactamente lo mismo pero con otro driver. Ambas cámaras fueron probadas en la PC de un compañero mío con Ubuntu 9 y funcionan perfectamente, de hecho con dmesg se ve que toma el mismo driver. Alguna idea? Hola. Tras un fallo en el disco duro del servidor que tenía en producción, lo he sustituido por el de reserva y ya tengo un disco nuevo para revivir el sistema dañado. En principio puedo instalar en él cualquier SO que cumpla los siguientes requisitos: - Capaz de gestionar todos los dispositivos instalados - Kernel 2.6.28 o anterior (para que funcionen los parches linux-abi) - Que tenga disponible el konsole del KDE3 - Compatible con vmware (preferible la versión 1.0.X) Va a ser el servidor interno de mi red (no estará visible directamente desde internet), por lo que: a) lo más importante es que sea estable b) podré continuar usándolo con total tranquilidad incluso cuando la distribución ya no esté mantenida. Otra duda: hasta ahora instalo siempre dos discos duros en mis servidores, de modo que los datos están en un disco y hago copias de seguridad automatizadas cada cuatro horas en el otro disco, así, cuando se avería uno de los discos, siempre puedo echar mano de la copia. ¿debería aprovechar para montar un RAID1 / RAID5? ¿por software o por hardware? Y por último, ¿reiserfs, ext3 o ext4? Saludos.
