Hello all, Just a quick intro: I have been dabbling with various Linux distributions for a couple of years now, usually focusing on purpose-built distros, but it is only recently that I've taken the plunge and installed it as my primary OS on my work computer (actually my own from home; work's were too slow!), my laptop and my home desktop machine. For those that are interested my distro of choice was SUSE 9.3 Professional. In truth is hasn't been that much of a wrench as I have access to a Win2003 terminal server so pretty much everything is still available should I need it... Back to my point: I was wondering whether anyone uses Linux in a HE/FE environment? I am particularly interested in whether you have encountered problems when asked to support educational solutions be they installables or web-based resources (such as Learndirect courses)? Does anyone have a requirement for Microsoft-specific applications such as Visual Studio? How about realistic alternatives for things like Adobe Photoshop and AutoCAD? While I guess these would be more applicable to Colleges I would have thought that schools and Universities may have had to deal with such issues? How about users on the administrative network? While OO seems like a pretty suitable replacement for MSOffice (I'm still unsure abount an MSAccess replacement) how do you deal with the mandatory Windows software doled out by Government bodies such as the LEA? any governor support systems out there

Hi, Having seen the testing round starting it reminded me this resource was still around. I wondered if anyone had any information about open source solutions in two areas? 1. A governor' management system for clerks to Governors - basically organising governors, meetings, minutes, details, etc. I have heard of some commercial ones, often MS Access based, but nothing open. 2. Anything in the document management area that automatically makes managing minutes, policies etc. easier, filing, finding, time managing and so on from the point of view of of the Freedom of Information Act where policies and data has to be managed and kept for variable periods. A little vague I know but not something that I'm aware of all the ramifications as to what might be needed, but I wondered if anything like these had ben thought of / entered the school management open software arena yet? Testing.. sorry

Something odd seemed to have happened with this list for me. I've not had anything for a while now (12th september was the last message), and I came in to work on Monday to find an e-mail from the list telling me it had had problems sending me any messages. All I had to do, apparently, was reply to the e-mail leaving the contents blank, which I did. Then today I log in and find I've got a digest of messages from February 2000?! Upgrade 9.2 -> 9.3 XFCE4 screwup

I upgraded overnight using the Linux Mag DVD of suse 9.3. Unfortunately on this low end machine it wiped out - like exterminated - xf4ce and there is no option to reinstall it. Bloody hell. FVWM is crawling like the proverbial caching stuff to disk where xfetc. could run evolution and firefox in memory at one time with little or no caching. How can I get xf4ce back? (or is it xfce4, can't remember now!). Anyway, nothing on a search for installable software under Yast brings up anything under variations of that. ISTR there was a suse rpm set someone had done for xfce4 ... does anyone know about this? Malcolm
