Pam_mount on SuSe 9.1

I am trying to install SuSE 9.1 as a workstation in a NT 4 Domain network. The default suse 9.1 install installed winbind etc, and configured them allowing me to log on to ssh with a NT username and password. I now want to configure pam_mount to mount a subdirectory of the unix home directory as the NT home directory. I had configured this on an old SuSE 8.1 box, so I think /etc/pam_mount.conf should be OK. However, having added auth and session lines for pam_mount into /etc/pam.d/sshd I can only get to the stage that in /var/log/messages I see pam_mount: error trying to retrieve authtok from auth code How do I enable pam_mount? I realise a thin-client typically runs everything on the server, and displays output on the client, but this is often unappropriate in some instances. What LTSP does do, is allow these thin clients to do some of the work their end. It has been a while since I played with LTSP, but the concept of having a small root partition image which is installed at each reboot is nothing new. Indeed, what you could do is just image across the KDE binaries -- X11 is a client/server technology anyway. so it doesn't have to be installed locally in any way. In so doing, of course, you decentralise the processing of KDE to the thin-clients [1], allowing the server to handle concurrent access of applications such as OO, The Gimp, etc. Or alternatively, you buy another server which handles KDE, although how anything can handle KDE is a miracle in itself. :) If you'd like more details I can supply them, although it might take me a day or two to get back to you -- I am beyond swamped with University work at the moment. -- Thomas Adam [1] Whether they're now thin-clients or not is debatable. CD Burn

Hi All, I'm planning to to a 1000 CD burn next month of the Open CD type - except with: * OpenOffice v2 Beta (or release if we're lucky!) * Some free tutorials if I can find them I would use the OpenCD but they are still on v1.3 This is going to cost me around £600 - but give a huge value of software to my pupils and their families. Indeed, and this can happen to any supplier, no matter what their size! Our supplier also had exactly this problem. A dreadful batch of hardrives from a company who also shall not be mentioned. Our supplier was RM, so no one can argue that you wouldn't have had your problem "if you'd gone with a larger supplier". 19 station LTSP network

I've just been asked to draft a proposal for /possibly/ setting up a 2nd IT room here at St Ives. Unfortunately, the preliminary figures will be needed by 4/5/05! I'd like to explore the possibility of going the LTSP route (we have a multi-purpose Linux server already, but are running win98 clients on the rest of the network). We can do a fair bit of stuff ourselves (network cabling and configuration), but draw the line at building computers! The room would be quite cramped with 19 stations, and cost is going to be a key issue here, I'm afraid. The thin client option seems quite appealing, but I'd prefer KDE desktops, even though this may place a lot of extra load on the poor application server, and obviously would want to run things like Office software, and web-browsing; I'd also like to be able to run rosegarden and gimp(!) Can anyone here suggest specs and suppliers for the server(s) and terminals, or point me in the direction of UK based suppliers? Also, I wonder if any of the commercial interests on the list would be interested in quoting for this? mounting drives

Hi All: I currently have my work mounted on a separate drive in my system as /home. That drive is a 10G drive. I thought it was prudent to put it on it's own drive so that when I invariably messed up my main system with tinkering, I would not lose my work. I now have a 40G drive for this task. How do I go about swapping them out. I assume I can copy the data onto my main drive (in /tmp or somesuch), then switch off the machine, take out 10G, put in 40G, reboot and then go to Yast and assign new 40G drive as /home (copying back all the data once I set up me again)? However, I am worried that it will make SuSE cut-up rough. If it tries to read fstab and does not find /dev/hda? for /home, will it hang? Also, if it doesn't find "me" on the drive... Brief report on today's Becta Open Source Seminar

Hi All, Overall, the meeting was very positive with Becta clearly looking for a single point of contact with the various FLOSS communities. A brief summary would be: * that the Becta OS TCO report will be published after the election. This report seems likely to produce considerable interest in the use of FLOSS in schools. * Becta is loking for ways to support and encourage schools considering the uptake of FLOSS. * that the construction of a gateway to a set of FLOSS resources and companies needs to be made available to aid schools in their decision making. A report in more detail will follow as soon as it has been typed up.
