I don't know if it is relevant to this but the initial release of
firefox 1.0 had a bug which meant that you could not save preferences
properly. I can't remember the details (you could google for them if
interested) but a fixed version appeared within a few days, you may need
to find the fixed version. I am currently using firefox-1.0-r3.
