How do I kill kde and return the server to just a login so that I can save on resources. I have never done this as I am a child of the gui and it is killing my web server on the net. Paul

Becta's other activities

Has anyone seen the test - bed program? http://www.becta.org.uk/corporate/corporate.cfm?section=15&id=3078#ans1 27 million pounds for 5 secondary schools and associated feeder schools ought to ensure that they get the right answers! Some time ago I emailed this program to ask if any of the testbed schools were using open source solutions - guess what the answer was. Is this in breach of the e-envoy's rules? I also offered to help them by becoming a testbed, so far I have not recieved a reply. We can all be thankful to Becta for this one also: http://www.becta.org.uk/corporate/press_out.cfm?id=3098 Such a wise institution charged with protecting UK educational ICT falling for one of Microsoft's well documented lock-in tactics - surely not? http://www.iht.com/articles/96369.html On new year's eve I sit comfortable in the knowledge that the future of our ICT provision is in such safe hands. I suspect it is like much education policy, (or any govt policy) civil servants playing safe and a dread fear of individual initiative. Heaven forbid that a teacher might actually know where to get freeware (even Windows freeware), how to install it, test it, evaluate it and decide to use it, or not. There is a slight chance that he/she might download something that screws things up, but so what? The worst that can happen is he/she gets to format the hard drive and re-install, which is a hell of a learning exercise. Teach them the importance of backups apart from anything else! I don't think for one minute it is some campaign against FLOSS, just FUD. Keep on banging away you are making a small impression. Web readers use less bandwidth in most cases e.g. spam mails don't need to be downloaded, unnecessary or irrelevant attachments can be deleted directly from the server. Web readers that work well? I know several, but a particularly impressive one comes with SuSE Linux Open Exchange server. Strictly speaking of course, products such as OpenOffice.org and Mozilla Thunderbird (the latter being infinitely superior to Outlook Express) are not shareware or freeware as they are open source. Freeware is software that is free as in beer, but is a precompiled executable; eliminating these is sensible. zope and plone install

2 quickies for you on suse 9 I have had a lot of head scratching trying to install zope so I did it this way ... http://zope.nipltd.com/public/lists/zope-archive.nsf/AGByKey/8A32AC91885767… .. but this means it will only run when I log on as zope. How do I run it logged on as anybody? I tried to install plone from the rpm but it put it in a very different place to where i was expecting! Do I need to compile from source? Will this make a difference? (I have never compiled anything from source) Or did I simply get the wrong rpm? Thanks and best wishes Darren
