I have a small LTSP system currently running OpenOffice 1.0 as supplied with Suse 8.1.
I would like to upgrade to OpenOffice 1.1.0, for the better import filters etc.
However I can not find a RPM for Suse 8.1 which I can upgrade with!
I don`t want to break the system by trying to install in the wrong place from a tar ball or something similar.
Any suggestions?
Installation from the tarball can be achieved without damaging your system and I would recommend doing this. Although SUSE and others may provide rpms for your system, using the tarball installation means that you can keep up to date with the OpenOffice release cycle. By its nature, OpenOffice installs neatly in one single directory, so it doesn't make an rpm based system untidy or unworkable. We use such an installation on our own rpm based system and can upgrade or remove it without difficulty or system compromise. You just need to install it somewhere that is sensible and clearly an add-on to the system. Choose either /usr/local or /opt, so that the OpenOffice.org directory is either: /usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.1.0 or /opt/OpenOffice.org1.1.0 The first thing to do is to uninstall the 1.0 version using rpm; something like `rpm -e openoffice` will do the job. Then you just download the version of ooffice that you want; the openoffice.org site has a portal to download the tarballed version (it's precompiled, but comes with an installation program). untar it: tar xvzf openoffice_version.tar.gz cd into the directory and, as root, run the installation program, which is either called setup or install; though I can't remember which. The dialogue based installation will guide you through entering the destination directory for the installation. There are also detailed instructions for installation as a pdf in the untarred openoffice directory. Hope that helps, Seb James.
I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.
