I hope that you at least report these problems somewhere. A web page that you publish the URL of, for example, as a list of challenges to developers. If you find it a problem, others may well do too, but the solutions may already be out there. Navigation is a part of the problem. I'm not sure that web search engines alone will save us from getting lost in this map of new software. The solutions are out there and easy to find, they are not always easy to implement as they often involve file manipulation and detailed knowledge of complicated software. I am willing to persevere but I have been at a few schools now who have given up, despite being happy with the results.
BTW I managed to get Moodle to work on SuSE 8.2 by uninstalling apache and php (the SuSE compiled rpms) and installing versions from tarballs with the appropriate options. I could not get php working with apache (in the way needed for Moodle) as it was shipped with 8.2. This in itself can be complicated but this time was quite easy. However, I can't see many people pouring through 800 page tomes to find the answers.
