Yep, I changed the setting, (yes, it was the right one!), been tailing the
log which works with IdentD (always has!) - and -k reconfigured, and also
stopped and started it. Nothing. :(

Is it logging at all? If not then most likely /var/log/squid does not exist
or is not writable to the squid process.

If it's logging something then are you sure you restarted
squid or did "squid -k reconfigure" it does not automatically re-read its
config file (unlike some other programs).
