So I copied files from root into the boot partition - ran lilo (now successful) and it now boots BUT
Re-booting gives an error that it failed to find a swapfile signature.
So how do I restore a signature?
See: `man mkswap'
Ah - well I had used mkswap - as mkswap /dev/hdb2 to create it on a second drive while I was copying data from first to it. I then replaced the first drive with the second - and expected the swap space to be found on /dev/hda2 Clearly - I have misunderstood something - and mkswap must have put something in a config file which directed the OS to look for swap space elsewhere. I expected the partition to be found on boot up and used. I must say that having now copied the whole installation and got it going - it is easier than doing the same with Windows which always has hassles with open files failing to copy (registry and virtual memory) which have to be dealt with in some round about way. -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School
