Hi folks,
I've set up an LTSP server in a local school. I don't know much about Linux printing. Could someone recommend a cheap (£250ish) mono laser printer that is easy to set up (RedHat 7.2 on that box). Is there one make that someone has had good/bad experience with?
I've nearly always used HP-compatible laser printers (there have been one or two Postscript ones). If you can get a laser that speaks native PostScript, you have absolutely no problem, as PostScript is the preferred output format for all(?) Linux/Unix graphical programs. The Ghostscript support for HP printers (PCL) is also very good - if you have one, and that particular printer isn't specifically listed in RedHat's 'printtool' printer list, then simply say that it's an HP Laserjet (possibly Series 4 or 5, depending on the version of PCL your printer supports). As for a recommendation, I'd tend to recommend HP printers. If they're too expensive for your budget, look for HP compatible ones, and you shouldn't have a problem.
