If you've got a noisy line then you could try fiddling around with the
MRU & MTU. Making these values smaller will mean shorter packets &
less chance of dropped packets. You should be able to make a
compromise somewhere where the overhead of smaller packets is balanced
by less packet loss hopefully resulting in the best throughput.

You can assess how you're doing by looking at the output of ifconfig
whilst your connection is up. The lines beginning RX & TX packets give
you the info you need.

You also might be able to complain to BT about a noisy line. If it
doesn't meet a minimum standard then I understand that they will fix
it without charge.
