It's nice to be able to see & handle the shares from an administrative workstation - but our users don't actually see anything but what we point them to! Our home drives (and other USER shares) are all set up via logon scripts, anyway. The only one who can access anything else is me, and I don't generally need to.
If your going to run with CAT5 UTP then do the lot with it. I use a similar topology to what your proposing but with 100 Mbps switches at the core, going down to 10/100 switches and then either to individual systems at 10 or 100 mbps depending upon their situation with 10 mbps hubs for large classroom setups. I don't need to use crossover cables from my hubs to the individual workstations.
Hub to workstation is straight.
Hub to Hub is crossover.
Hub/switch to UPLINK port is straight.
Hint:
Make sure that you use matched pairs for the communications lines (i.e.
Green -White/Green; Orange - White/Orange), otherwise you get datastorm due
to interference and a burnout in the line drivers - new network cards &
hubs.
