I don't think you are making LINUX fall over, so much as setting up a connection through an incorrect channel. I won't tell anyone, honest! :-)
Sendmail never asks for a communication device during set-up, but yast asks how you have your connection to the outside world set up. Thanks, I wasn't sure of that before. I did the installation while far too tired, and didn't take any notes as it was far too easy and couldn't possibly go wrong!
My guess is that you have either set up PPP and that is where you have set up TTY instead of ttyS0 (note case is important), or the other place you may have entered the wrong info is under yast/system admin/integrate hardware - here you can configure the device your modem is using, in your case use /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1 Hope this helps Yes loads thanks, you have prompted my memory - The modem details must be in vwdial.
