How to Install Squid

Hello to all, I have very recently installed SUSE Linux 6.4 and downloaded Squid. I am a brand new user of this operating system (my brain is getting badly over heated), and would like help to install the above proxy server. If there is any kind sir or madam out there who could kindly point me in the right direction. This is perhaps a tall order to help a beginner, But thanks all the same in anticipation. I have a running battle over chat rooms which I don't tolerate at all. However, as my net connection is on an NT box, I use Wingate proxy server and block all urls containing "chat" and "eshare" (popular chat server on web). Plus any others I spot on the logs. Might this work with Squid or Apache? chatrooms

As you all know kids love chat rooms, at the moment during 'club time' and in the sixth form they access them, or at least try to access them constantly. Whilst I am sure that Apache could, being used as a proxy, block them, I have not bothered as BT, who're taking us over, will do the blocking. If you mean will act as an internet web server too - then see http://www.netcraft.com/survey/ - apache runs 60 % (and growing) of the worlds web servers ;-) If you mean will it do the proxy/caching stuff - then it could do, but I think (from what I hear - I don't actually know myself) that squid would be better ... (on shaky ground now ...) If you want apache to run just internally, then it is worth bearing in mind that any box actually connected to the internet and doing internet things (DNS, mail, etc) should really only be running with the minimum features enabled to do its job, in the interests of security. So I would recommend running apache for internal purposes, (if that is what you want), on a separate machine ... Just my opinion Kevin.

Assuming that you haven't come across these before (forgive me if this assumption is incorrect), but you will need a web server to 'serve them up' (apache is the usual choice for Linux). Basically, the HTML file will do in the documents area of the web server and the CGI script will go in the 'scripts area'. These are 'htdocs' (sometimes 'html') and cgi-bin respectively for apache (often installed in /home/httpd). The client connects to the HTML and CGI scripts via a web browser using something like : http://your.machine/passwd.html Which in turn will probably invoke the script, which could also be called directly at : http://your.machine/cgi-bin/passwd.cgi There may well be a '<form ... >' statement in the passwd.html with an 'action=xyz' bit. This may have to be changed to point to the passwd.cgi script, as seen by users via your web server (for example above, this would be something like 'action=/cgi-bin/passwd.cgi'). I recently saw an online filter system which had been linked (accidentally) to the spellcheck dictionaries - the net result was that ANYTHING which was not made-up words was rejected! A few moments work fixed the problem, but had caused a few minutes utter panic. So,nfhijdncf gghst hduiuksf jlsdc. kjhdf md gssd. hi all (and Liz) as far as i am aware none of main Educational Resellers we know and love are promoting a Linux solution over an NT one. Surfeit of Security?

I wonder if anyone else is suffering a rash of returned/refused mail messages from cambourne.comm.coll.cornwall.sch.uk because I have now had in excess of 50 messages saying delivery of (an unknown) e-mail has been refused because of its nature! I think that includes the request to them to stop sending the refusal messages! I guess that's the ultimate in anti-bullying, anti-spamming, anti-communicative e-mail filters.
