newsreader

Following my earlier post about modems, I got myself a 3Com-USR 56k faxmodem,plugged it in and it works.
The K e-mail client works, Netscape works although slowly, using the file
manager as a browser is much faster.
I cant get the K newsreader to work however. I've put the settings for SMTP
server and NNTP server to match the settings I usually use for Agent on my NT
machine:
SMTP post.demon.co.uk
NNTP news.demon.co.uk
I have left the other boxes blank.
When the newsreader initially attempts to get the available group list, the
modem is busy, but it never finishes getting them.
Any suggestions?
