Hi
New Linux user - Ian Mason, IT Technician/Network Manager at Corpus Christi High School, Cardiff.
I purchased SuSE 6.3 to try and familiarise myself with Linux and to try out the OS on a few standalone machines (curriculum networks still rooted with RM/NT4 for the foreseeable future!). Particularly interested in the workstation security that Linux could provide (translated to mean I'm fed up with Windows installations being destroyed by users and a multitude of games and other undesirable software appearing on our standalone machines!).
So far have just installed onto one machine. The only problem I had was YaST2 hanging up at the end of the package installation when I tried to install LILO to the hard disk boot partition. A look at the SuSE website support database revealed that a bug in the installation procedure was causing this - the problem does not exist if you choose to copy LILO to a floppy, then copy it to the hd partition using YaST. Would have been nice to have a note to this effect with the boxed copy of SuSE - it would have saved me running through the installation four time wondering what was going on !!
Sorry about this: note - you can always boot from CD 2 and use the `expert installation'.
Now I have just got to find some time from somewhere to start playing with the system!
Look forward to reading loads more on this list . . . .
