I've spent a week or so messing around with Linux and I have reached the following conclusions.
1. Desktop looks good has some nice functions. I guess you're talking about KDE. Of couse you have a choice of desktops in Linux.
2. It's more resource hungry than windows (not less as the hype clams) This all depends on what you're trying to do with it. Yes if you're trying to run very large graphical programs. StarOffice certainly wants a lot of resources. But in general my experience is that on the same hardware you get somewhat better performance with Linux.
3. A step backwards when it comes to application and service install and setup. Not so: maybe installation of programmes via yast looks less frindly than double clicking on setup.exe, but the rpm system keeps absolute tabs on what an installation is doing to your system so that you can uninstall perfectly cleanly.
4. Poorly documented. I wonder if you've actually discovered all the documentation yet: I know I certainly hadn't within my first `week or so' with Linux. There is absolutely masses, both on the system and `out there'.
5. Seems to offer nothing over windows expect the price tag, (which isn't much if you already have a network) and commercial companies will still have to charge for applications. Of course you're entitled to this opinion, but I beg to differ. And of course there are enormous numbers of free applications (both in the sense of free beer and in the sense of free speech)
To conclude I think my time would be better spent developing my NT skills at present and waiting until linux advances into a more user friendly operating system.
