Hi Jana ! I have opened the bugs you requested, and pointed to you as main allower :)
openSUSE documentation (start-up guide) structure is incorrect and it lacks a lot in Part II.
what about filing a bug report on these? Just stating the structure does not meet your ideas is a bit vague :) It would help us a lot to be able to understand what exactly you (and possibly others) are missing there.
Start guide structure: Well, just I think that the Mobility "Part III" must go somewhere... not be "Part III" in start guide... Maybe this section can go to the LfL or Reference guide, while only the main things remain in startup guide, such as mobile (laptop) hardware, and even then should be moved to "Part I". Reference Guide structure: Process control is good example of the poor structure of the reference guide, see here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=261201
openSUSE documentation does explain: (start-up guide)
-ls -vi (lacks link to vimtutor, should be added to section 8.7.1)
hmmm, either we have added it for the Enterprise release of the doc or you missed the link. It is in there and it will continue to be so in 10.3 for sure. It would indeed be a shame, if it wouldn't be in there.

openSUSE documentation does not explain: (start-up guide)
-archiving with tar https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=261190 -job control in bash https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=261184 -hardlinks and softlinks https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=261193 -process control (ps, kill, killall, top, nice, renice, ...) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=261201
hmmm? These items may not be covered in the Start-up Guide, but please check the Reference guide and again help us by opening a bug report against the existing doc. We'll be happy to oblige.
I have checked... most topics are not covered or poorly covered in SUSE Reference guide as well. Those are the same topic covered excellently at Mandrake (note: Mandrake, not Mandriva, as their current distro is of poor quality and lacks the good documentation they once included in Mandrake Linux 9.2 in year 2003). Speaking of SUSE - there are rumors that SUSE also had better documentation at the past days - but since I haven't saw it I can't judge.... but it would be good to have a look at past SUSE documentation and maybe update and re-introduce new chapters to current docs. One example is "mc" chapter.
-building and installing Free Software (from .tar.gz)
this item would indeed be a good one to start from for LfL. But then again, you'd never have a procedure that matches all tar packages. Packages may come with their own special set of instructions in their README. And it's arguable whether an entirely new newbie really is up to compiling his own packages.
ok, I might write this down to the LfL... later....
-runlevels (very poor explanation in SUSE)
hmmm, not in Start-up, but have you checked the Reference manual? If so, please help us by filing a bug report so we can take your points and improve the existing stuff.
Yes, I did, and didn't liked that stuff. Once I will formalize what I want I will open a bug report.
Those are important things explained very well in Mandrake Docs.
-mc
point taken. The old - really old (SUSE Linux 7.x) - docs had a very nice chapter on mc. I could try and investigate whether we could use these sources and publish them as part of LfL. They'd be a good starting point, at least. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=261210
-screen
Another point taken. screen really is one cool app :) Do you want to attack the issue and cover it in LfL or would you like to see it in the official doc?
Good question... I have already showed a bit of it's functionality in LfL. Maybe I will extend my LfL's article, but would be happy to see others participating in my LfL works too...
Our team will be happy to start brainstorming about the issues brought up and I am pretty sure we'll find a solution that really flies and that doesn't make neither you nor us drown in work.
Thanks ! Very nice ! Ohh, and Jana, please add yourself as "CC" to the bugs opened above, as I want you to participate in the discussions of the topics above. I have tried to add you, but bugzilla returned me an error. -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org
