While this is basically true MD5 is used in OBS all over the place and thus for consistency and code reuse reasons it might still make sense to go with that.
IIRC, osc is python. Python has hashlib, which implements many hashing algorithms in a trivially usable form. hashlib.md5 vs hashlib.sha1 So, there's no excuse to still use MD5. And, if possible, applying message expansion[0] helps even further.
