I found that rearranging spec file seemed to fix the problem. FWIW the
original spec file that caused the trouble is here:
http://ascendcode.cheme.cmu.edu/viewvc.cgi/code/branches/extfn/ascend.spec?view=co

This spec file works fine for FC6.
