I've looked into this some more:
The evdev driver returns -ENODEV on close() when access to the device has been
revoked. The revocation was done by systemd-logind itself - it happens whenever
the session is not 'active'. The session is considered 'active' if there is no
seat or the current seat is identical to the session.
Therefore this fix prevents systemd-logind from dying, thus the Xserver is
starting when started directly from the text console - however, since any input
device is opened thru systemd-logind, it still cannot receive mouse or keyboard
input - even if started as root.
