I can reproduce the same (with a similar Xorg.0.log) on real hardware if I add "nomodeset" to the boot options (or blacklisting the KMS driver via brokenmodules=i915 or similar). Adding "vga=0x317" or similar makes it work again. If needed/helpful, I can provide an Xorg.0.log for both cases.
