I fired up tcpdump to see what was going on and it turned out to be traffic originating from a couple of Devolo AV500 Powerline Adapters: 08:07:33.601884 bc:f2:af:91:72:21 (oui Unknown) > Broadcast, ethertype Unknown (0x8912), length 60: 0x0000: 0170 a000 0000 1f84 01a3 97a2 5553 bef1 .p..........US.. 0x0010: fcf9 796b 5214 13e9 e200 0000 0000 0000 ..ykR........... 0x0020: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 .............. 08:07:36.104648 bc:f2:af:91:72:23 (oui Unknown) > bc:f2:af:1d:64:ba (oui Unknown), ethertype Unknown (0x88e1), length 60: 0x0000: 0115 0000 0001 bcf2 af1d 64ba 0101 0300 ..........d..... 0x0010: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 ................ 0x0020: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 .............. 08:07:38.601912 bc:f2:af:91:72:21 (oui Unknown) > Broadcast, ethertype Unknown (0x8912), length 60: 0x0000: 0170 a000 0000 1f84 01a3 97a2 5553 bef1 .p..........US.. 0x0010: fcf9 796b 5214 13e9 e200 0000 0000 0000 ..ykR........... 0x0020: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 .............. 08:07:42.147487 bc:f2:af:91:72:23 (oui Unknown) > bc:f2:af:1d:64:ba (oui Unknown), ethertype Unknown (0x88e1), length 60: 0x0000: 0115 0000 0001 bcf2 af1d 64ba 0101 0300 ..........d..... 0x0010: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 ................ 0x0020: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 .............. Unplugging the powerline adapters confirmed that these packets are the culprit, after that there were no more dropped packets. I'm wondering what is causing this, since this seems to occur only for a single machine (with an Intel I218V Gigabit Ethernet NIC). Could this be an issue with the kernel driver?
