I suppose, the setup works for grub1 is because it's stage1 was installed to
mbr (or gpt-sync-mbr) and then use blocklist to find stage2 on raid1 partition
(/dev/md1) which is ext4 partition. As long as raid1 only duplicates blocks the
block list from file system is valid. But I think this can only provided to
work with raid0 or raid1, other RAID with striping or LVM (which remaps file
system block) can't work this way.
OTOH, grub2's complain is on general RAID and LVM setup which really requires a
bootloader image embedded that understands RAID and LVM format.
