It's because the primary audio device (index 0) is HDMI, and its device number
is assigned to 3, i.e. hw:0,3. You must change the configuration accordingly.
The default config of mpd, especially like the static numbering like hw:0,0,
cannot work at all with all systems blindly.
I guess you want to use the onboard analog? Then it'll be hw:1,0 instead (and
the control API needs to use hw:1, too). An alternative workaround is to pass
index=1,0 option to snd-hda-intel module. This will exchange the order of HDMI
and onboard analog audio devices, and the onboard analog will become the
primary one.
Speaking of pulseaudio: if you're running the mp daemon as root, it's also
difficult because PA takes the sound device exclusively, and PA is basically
per user; i.e. you'll have two PA daemons and they'll conflict with each other.
