In anyway, to figure out whether it's a KDE problem or not, try the following:
- Boot in runlevel 3, login on Linux console
- Adjust the mixer elements via "alsamixer -c0"
- Reboot once again in runlevel 3, login on Linux console
- Check whether the speaker is muted (again via "alsamixer -c0")
- Try plug/unplug the headphone and test sounds via "aplay -Dhw -vv foo.wav"
If this works, the problem is either in PulseAudio or kmix.
The next step is to test PA.
- Boot in runlevel 5, but login to twm or icewm, i.e. neither KDE nor GNOME but
a bare desktop
- Open a terminal, check whether pulseaudio is running; if not, run manually
there
- Run "alsamixer -c0" on another terminal, watch how Headphone volumes/mutes
change per jack plug. Test sounds via "aplay -vv foo.wav" (don't pass -Dhw).
If this is OK, the problem is in kmix.
