Err...that's weird.
you just need to add "-dddt" and "-O /var/run/wpa_supplicant", "-O" is a
capital o, not zero.[1]
Generally the strength is from AP's beacon and it is always updated.
If you run "iw wlan0 scan", you shall find the signal is not constantly in
every scan.
[1] this is how my configure file look like:

/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/fi.w1.wpa_supplicant1.service
[D-BUS Service]
Name=fi.w1.wpa_supplicant1
