I finally found out the reason.
I did configure a search domain in NM for my own domain. So the system requests
an A record for the original domain name, which is a FQDN, and for that name
with the suffix of the search domain. The search domain has a *.domain.tlf type
A record, so the DNS returns my IP address for any address in the search
domain. Apparently it takes a long time (too long) to return an IP address for
the FQDN.
I did remove the search domain from NM and now the problem is gone. I probably
should also remove the *.domain.tlf record and enter any name that I need
explicitly.
In case the wait time to receive an answer for the FQDN is too small, you might
reopen the bug report. Now I will close it as solved.
Most likely a double CNAME has nothing to do with the problem. AFAIK a double
CNAME should not be present and is not conform the RFC (don't know which one,
but quite some years ago I learned that it does not conform)
