Sorry about not replying before to #13.
I don't have kernel sources installed in the laptop, so building kernel modules
is not viable. I intended to do the test, but it needed more time than I had at
the time, then forgot.
For the record (using 11.4 evergreen now):

With gnome and network manager (not ifup) using the wifi button does work as
expected, network goes off and on following the button and the LED.
I don't know if this is because network manager works better, or an update has
fixed it. I will change the resolution of this bugzilla to "worksforme" if you
don't mind.
I can not test ifup at this location.
