--- Comment #20 from Peter Davis 2013-02-01 15:55:00 UTC ---
Thanks for your suggestions, but what I'm doing doesn't seem to yield much in
the way of an improvement.
When I logged in, producing the terminal window, systemctl stop xdm.service
returned me to log in without the graphical interface.
When I logged in at the prompt, systemctl status xdm.service yielded
xdm.service - LSB: X Display Manager
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/xdm)
Active: inactive (dead) since ., . . . .:.:. +0000; . . ago
Process: 3558 ExecStop=/etc/init.d/xdm stop (code=exited,
status=0/SUCCESS)
Process: 3283 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/xdm start (code=exited,
status=0/SUCCESS)
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/xdm.service
.........kdm_config[3315]: Multiple occurrences of section . . .
.
.
.
........xdm[3283]: Starting . .
.........xdm[3558]: Shutting down . . .
I copied this longhand, so have replaced with dots text that appears to me to
be less significant.
The fifth line may be the sort of false stop you had in mind, but appears to be
countered at the end. As it is, systemctl start xdm.service returned me to
logging in with the graphical interface, after which I had to startkde in the
terminal window as has become usual. Please let me know if I should be
entering the commands in some other way.
I regret that /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't mean much to me, but, if it could be
helpful to you, would be happy to post it.
