Tried recovery mode to start op opensuse. Got "GNOME failed to load" message, click on close and the desktop stays, but it must be GNOME 2 then...

Are you using opensource NV driver?
No. however I use xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau on other workstation. It doesn't occur problem like this.
Also I am not very familiar with NIS account. Can you check if it is in local "video" group?
