--- Comment #76 from Johannes Obermayr 2012-09-20 14:39:21 UTC ---
JFYI: I decided to stop contribution to openSUSE and deleted home:jobermayr
because I cannot identify with the situation some maintainers have done things:
As said comments like "use nomodeset" are more welcomed than "attach dmesg and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log" and fixing the error and/or speaking with upstream
developers and finally provide fast and easy update.
In some discussions upstream developers advised against splitting libdrm and/or
Mesa package. openSUSE does it although I said they shouldn't: bug 747800
So they introduced a to avoid issue:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/rdiff?linkrev=base&package=Mesa&project=X11%3AXOrg&rev=242
(libOSMesa9) is not correct because of
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=10a96f4a4d3d3166fa6907d4b30...
Only a snippet from #dri-devel:
[Donnerstag, 28. Juni 2012] [09:21:31] <jobermayr> The problem I see is on
distribution side: They (e. g. openSUSE) have bad rules that 0.so.1 must be in
a foo0-1 package. 2.so.3 must be in a foo2-3 package which is not allowed to
obsolete foo0-1 package . Then when doing a distribution update the obsolete
package will no become uninstalled ...
[Donnerstag, 28. Juni 2012] [09:39:17] <airlied> jobermayr: just get an
excption to stupid rules
I doubt you will really bisect the fixing commits like I did previously for my
hardware because doubt you have all the hardware and or time.
The proposed Tumbleweed solution does not work because it uses another Kernel.
Maybe one of you is able to launch a discussion. I won't do it but you are
welcomed to invite me.
There is a IRC #opensuse-kernel but where are the maintainers for a real-time
discussion?
I also have not got requested information about download statistics of my home
project or as requested here for Update and Tumbleweed - so I cannot say
whether my effort is really worth.
So I come to conclusion that openSUSE maintainers do not follow the upstream
communication/work, do not support contributors [1] and do not heed the
suggestions from people doing so.
I hope the Kernel update comes soon to make your users happy.
Cheers!

#opensuse-buildservice by adrianS but when I had needed information the
communication stopped)
