I can start such a discusseion (although it will be after the vacation), but it
seems we are talking about something different. I do not see performance
decrease with all those fonts. My point is that the 09-texlive-*conf files are
not doing what you want them to do.
An example:
1. The amsfonts package is installed
2. I want to deactivate these fonts, therefore I look in /etc/fonts/conf.d to
remove a link to /etc/fonts/conf.avail. I see there 09-texlive.conf and no
other 08-* or 09-* conf files. I remove this link and expect the texlive fonts
to be deactivated.
3. Using a viewer to see what fonts are installed/activated on my system (e.g.
the fonts installer in KDE systemsettings) I see that the amsfonts are still
installed.
4. I look again in /etc/fonts and see that there is a 08-texlive-amsfonts.conf
in conf.avail, but *not* a symlink in conf.d Making or removing such a link
does not have any effect.
5. Looking into the file I see a directory /usr/share/fonts/texlive-amsfonts.
The directories in 09-texlive-*.conf are "/usr/(local/)share/texmf/fonts/" The
reason I cannot activate or deactivate amsfonts (and others) is that
"/usr/share/fonts:" (without "texmf") is, including subdirs, *always*
activated. 09-texlive-*.conf is using an other directory and there activating
and deactivating does work.
6. To solve this problem I have to add the next line to my ~/.fonts.conf:
<selectfont>
<rejectfont>
<glob>/usr/share/fonts/texlive-amsfonts</glob>
</rejectfont>
</selectfont>
To reproduce:
try to deactivate amsfonts without removing the package.
The same is true for other fonts.
I hope this make it clear what I meant, and I think you are thinking about
something else.
