I personally know five of the three remaining users of parallel port driven printers on linux computers. I do not know where you are taking the guesses about the remaining userbase of parallel printers from - similar to the folks from cups maintenance simply dropping parallel printer support. Sad to say that modern architectures keep creating issues on linux - what is very understandable - but less modern ones start to behave in a similar way :-(. Just my two cents, but your guesses about the userbase may be right for servers - but I bet there are still many users of I.e. good old laser printers with parallel ports - and besides the fading support in each and every OS (why the heck not load lp.ko by default? Who is heart by say 25kByte of wasted memory space? I haven't got an answer on this until now ....) there is no good reason to put them out of operation.
