However, finger and getent give no results from the active directory, only from the local files. These programs seemingly got some incorrect information or error message from /var/lib/samba/winbindd_privileged/pipe

With nsswitch.conf configured, finger and getent request user & group information via libnss_winbind. The failures are likely due to a bug in this code path, rather than incomplete libc integration, changing summary accordingly. ...

SuSE's KDM theme doesn't support active directory authentication at all!!!!
