The SHIFT key helped indeed.  This started the boot in ascii mode.  I didn't
know that this is possible, nice to know (especially because it has the memtest
option).

I can type the image name and start it.  However the output is as follows:

boot: openSUSE_Live_KDE
   ...........................
   9,5 activating image: [/cdrom/openSUSE_12.1.....]
   9,8 udevd: stop via control signal
 11,8 udevd: still running killing it the hard way
 11,8 preparing preinit phase
 11,8 failed to copy utimer code
 11,8 rebootException: reboot in 120sec
131,8 Failed to copy iprocs code
131,8 rebootException: reboot in 120sec
251,9 Failed to copy preinit code
251,9 rebootException: reboot in 120sec
etc

After this I tried the failsafe mode:
boot: Failsafe_--_openSUSE_Live_KDE
Could not find kernel image: Failsafe_--_openSUSE_Live_KDE

Seems like a bug to me.

It was possible to start the memtest

Dunno, might be.  If I look at those 2 links:

There is stated:
1) 8 Mb Flash with Intel Platform Innovation Framework for EFI PnP
and 
2) BIOS AMI EFI 16MB
Hence I assume there is EFI...., whay do you mean with "could you try it"?  I
examined the BIOS settings and did not find any references to EFI, if that
exists.....
