Perhaps a clue, triggered by the last sentence of comment 53. Short version, if
I manually umount /dev/pts beforehand, the shutdown works fine.
Long version: I noticed that at moment of hang (looping blogd), an umount -t
tmpfs /media was in progress (initiated by boot.localfs stop) and not going
anywhere. After I killed the controlling bash process, the shutdown continued.
Then I tried different permutations of manual umounts (the /media in itself
didn't help), after seeing that an umount -a also did the trick and finally
arrived at /dev/pts.
