upon issuing:

ctrlaltdel:~ # mount /home
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda8,
       missing codepage or helper program, or other error
       In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

ctrlaltdel:~ # dmesg | tail

!! whereas !!

ctrlaltdel:~ # mount -oro /home
ctrlaltdel:~ # mount -oremount,rw /home

does not complain!
