All of the referenced bugs had to do with iSCSI or SAN supplying the underlying
storage.
The SUSE patches that were indicated are not needed because the code they
represent is already in the kernel for openSUSE 11.4.
The vmware article you referenced talks about patching vmware, not the linux
kernel.
There must be some I/O errors occurring when your volume is going read-only.
Ext3 (and I believe ext4, which you are using) is known for going read-only if
I/O errors are detected.
If this occurs again, can you remount the filesystem read-write using:
mount -o remount /
Then check /var/log and dmesg for I/O errors.
The fact that you have RAID underlying the storage is interesting, as some
"BUSY" errors that have been known to make the filesystem read-only are related
to RAID failover. But you indicate no underlying O/S problems occurred, so
perhaps that is not an issue.
