Something is really weird here. After installing the cciss patch as described
in bug#757789, I noticed that eth0 was acting a bit flaky. For instance, when
broadcasting for a dhcp address, it would often time out. I then noticed that
the link and data LEDs were constantly flashing - not at the same time, and not
because of traffic. The link LED should have been just on.
Because I happened to have an old Knoppix CD within reach, I booted from that
(4.0.2, kernel 2.6.12) to see if it made a difference. Yes, it did - network
interfaces now worked normally.
I have no idea what the problem might be, but I have a hunch that it might be
irq related.
