By default, the synaptics driver is used, which is not able to handle multitouch and swipe gestures. Since the MacBook trackpads no longer have a separate button, multitouch is the only possible method to do basic things like selecting text. The mtrack driver is a continuation of the multitouch driver, found at https://github.com/BlueDragonX/xf86-input-mtrack It has also been packaged by a user in the http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai/openSUSE_12.1/ repository.
