xbacklight returns no errors when I type xbacklight -set 50.  The expected
result is an adjustment in the brightness to 50% but this does not happen.  The
kde gui controls show that the system thinks that indeed 50% has been set even
though no actual change in brightness has taken place.  Typing xbacklight -get
after the 50 command returns 42.857
