Summary: Firmware "carl9170-1.fw" for Atheros 9170 WLAN USB
stick (Netgear WN111v2) is missing
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 12.1
Version: Final
Platform: All
OS/Version: SuSE Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Network
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: uzsrjz@xxxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: qa@xxxxxxx

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/7.0.1

The current firmware "carl9170-1.fw" is not included in the kernel-firmware
package. Because of that the WLAN USB stick Netgear WN111v2 does not work
out-of-the-box. Downloading the current version 1.9.4 from linuxwireless.org
und saving it in /lib/firmware solves the problem. WPA-PSK works at sufficient
speed.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Installing openSUSE 12.1
2. Setting up WLAN
3. Try to establish WLAN connection
Actual Results:
Firmware "carl9170-1.fw" version 1.9.4 is not installed, so no WLAN connection
is established.

Expected Results:
Firmware "carl9170-1.fw" version 1.9.4 should be installed, so that a WLAN
connection can be established.

This problem was also present for openSUSE 11.4 in some way. The old kernel
modules needed the "ar9170.fw" firmware, which wasn't provided by the
kernel-firmware package. The provided firmwares "ar9170-1.fw" and "ar9170-2.fw"
did not work and are still provided by the standard installation. Anyway the
"ar9170.fw" had problems, too. Transfer rates were low and the connection was
interrupted after some time; the new driver seems to be better.
